This book contains a variety of fun classroom activities designed to help primary and secondary students to develop and practise creative thinking skills. Many of the activities require students to work co-operatively in groups and can be adapted to suit different curriculum content.

 

A user-friendly resource book for teachers, Creative Kaleidoscope contains numerous classroom activities that are designed to help students in the Middle Years develop creative thinking skills.

 

These practical and enjoyable activities require very little preparation and may be used in the classroom immediately.

 

Covering topics that range from the everyday to larger global and more serious issues, each activity can be used as a sound tool to help the development of systematic creative thinking.

 

Many activities require group work, encouraging students to learn cooperative social skills and most of the activities can be adapted to suit different content.

 

The book contains black line masters that can be photocopied and used in the classroom.

 

This Creative Kaleidoscope focuses on practical classroom activities which are user-friendly and easily implemented. Most require very little preparation and can be adapted to suit other specific content at either the primary or secondary level. This is because the underlying strategies can be used systematically
to develop creative thinking and are not just 'one-offs'.

 

Many of the activities require group work because students need to learn co-operative social skills, and co-creating allows access to the novel and effective thinking of classmates - allowing 'piggybacking' from one interesting but not-so-good idea to another better one. It is also important that students be allowed to create in an environment of psychological safety.

 

Co-operative group work, if correctly structured, allows for that. A 'no-put-down' rule should operate at all times. Respect for new ideas and alternative perceptions should also be conveyed at all times, and risk- taking with new ideas should be acceptable and respected behaviour.

 

Each of the 1 645 activities tells you:

  • Aspects of creativity
  • Key Learning Area (KLA) focus (taken from the Curriculum and Standards Frameworks)
  • Age suitability (the appropriate year levels for each topic)
  • Resources and preparation (the necessary teacher preparation before beginning the topic).

 

A number of blackline masters have been included in this book. Many of them can be photocopied, written on by students and then filed away. Others can be re-used many times, as they are posters to place on the classroom table for students to use as they work. We suggest you enlarge and laminate these 'Poster' blackline masters (denoted by a large symbol) for convenient re-use and maintenance.
